A lot of times, enjoying a good time with friends relies on decisions between choices, creating dilemmas. One such common dilemma found in most friendly gatherings is choosing between red wine and white wine. Designer Antonia Skaraki recognized this problem and set out to solve it while challenging the established notion that quality wine can only exist in a glass container.
The Wine Barrel Dilemma project aims to provide a user-friendly experience that offers a solution to the red wine or white wine dilemma. The highlight of this design is the ability to enjoy both types of wine in one packaging, eliminating the need to choose one over the other. The package features a handle for easy carrying, making it a perfect gift for visiting friends or family. Additionally, it is equipped with taps that allow for simple and convenient serving, similar to pouring water into a glass.
The concept behind The Wine Barrel Dilemma follows the idea of moving wine from a large barrel to a smaller barrel, preserving its natural habitat and enhancing the wine tasting experience. This innovative packaging is designed to cater to gatherings and parties, where consumers can now buy and enjoy a packaging consisting of both red and white wine.
The design team, led by Antonia Skaraki as the Creative Director and Andreas Deskas as the Art Director, aimed to create a packaging that stands out from the competition. The wooden wine barrel serves as the main reference point for the brand, differentiating it from others in the market. The packaging incorporates robust typography, special symbols, pyrographic markings, and handwritten elements, transporting the consumer to an imaginary cellar, in their own barrel, within the world of The Wine Barrel.
The color palette and symbolisms used in the design clearly separate the four product codes on the shelf while maintaining a common design element. This ensures that each variant is easily identifiable while still being part of the overall brand identity.
The Wine Barrel Dilemma project started in April 2020 and is still ongoing. The design team faced creative, technical, and research challenges to bring this unique packaging to life. By combining functionality, aesthetics, and the concept of wine out of the box, they have created a design that provides a solution to the wine choosing dilemma and enhances the overall wine drinking experience.
This innovative packaging design has been recognized and awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category in 2022. The Iron A' Design Award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Wine Barrel Dilemma stands out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world by providing fulfillment and positive feelings.
